Ibero-American Data Protection Network

The Ibero-American Data Protection Network (RIPD) was created in 2003 and currently brings together 34 entities, including 16 full members (Data Protection Authorities), among which is the National Data Protection Commission of Cabo Verde (CNPD), and 18 entities with observer status.

About the Ibero-American Data Protection Network

  • The RIPD is a forum that integrates public and private sector actors, promoting projects and initiatives related to data protection in the Ibero-American region.
  • Its main objective is to strengthen the exchange of information, experiences, and knowledge, as well as to promote legislative developments that ensure advanced and effective regulation of the right to personal data protection in a democratic context. This work takes into account the continuous flow of data between countries with common historical and cultural ties and the shared commitment to this fundamental right.
  • The desire to create a permanent forum to coordinate actions and wills was consolidated at the I Ibero-American Data Protection Meeting (EIPD), held in 2002, in Spain, with the participation of nine countries, including Portugal, represented by the CNPD.
  • The Network was officially formed the following year, in 2003, during the II EIPD, held in Antigua, Guatemala. Over the decades, the RIPD has played an essential role in strengthening data protection regimes in several Latin American countries and in the Ibero-American region in general.
  • One of its main milestones was the approval, in 2017, of the 'Personal data protection standards for Ibero-American countries'. These standards serve as a reference for the future regulation of the right to data protection, both for countries that do not yet have specific legislation and for those that wish to modernize and update their normative frameworks.

The CNPD and the RIPD

Cabo Verde's integration into the RIPD represents an important milestone, reinforcing the country's commitment to data protection and privacy in the international scenario.

  • Since its accession, the CNPD has actively participated in the Network's initiatives, contributing to the exchange of good practices and to the development of policies that promote fundamental rights in the Ibero-American space.
  • Cabo Verde's participation in the RIPD reflects its growing integration into global data protection dynamics, strengthening the country's commitment to ensuring that the rights to privacy and informational self-determination are duly protected.
